After 10 years of trying researchers at the University of Rhode Island have succeeded in creating transgenic fish with six pack abs and muscular shoulders. By inhibiting myostatin, a protein which regulates muscle growth, the team managed to breed rainbow trout that on average had 15 to 20 percent more muscle mass than normal fish, thereby increasing proportionally its total body mass. I don’t know if it is the looks or the thought of it, but I have to admit that, while I can see how such transgenic fish can indeed provide a tremendous boost to the profitability of the fish farming industry, somehow I am not eager to see it in my plate anytime soon.
