The latest addition to the smart clothes coming down the pipe towards the end of 2012 is the Under Armour E39 compression shirt which uses sensors to track and transmit heart rate, breathing, g-force and horsepower. This smart t-shirt is based on Zephyr Technologies, who make similar gear for the US special forces, and has a removable “bug” sensor equipped with a triaxial accelerometer, processor, and 2GB of storage flanked by additional monitors that measure heart rate and breathing. In addition, the software provided by Zephyr can then record and transmit wirelessly all the relevant biometric data about the athlete’s movements to a number of devices such as laptops and cellphones and help identify performance issues. Hear the story of the world’s most innovative smart T-shirt directly from the Under Armour innovators responsible for making it. Under Armour E39 Commercial [...]

The future is smart. Smart clothes, even smart underwear, produced with intelligent textiles that are enhanced with the latest nanotechnology will likely be as commonplace as their dumb relatives are today. Textiles that moisten the skin, absorb perspiration, measure your heartbeat and breathing, that are both soft to the touch, bulletproof and water resistant… Those are the kinds of textiles that European researchers are working on as evident by the following Futuris video. The Future is Smart, But What About Us?

by Socrates

The future is smart. We are pretty smart already. We have smart phones and smart watches and some of us drive smart cars. Occasionally, we even kill each other with smart bombs. (Hey wait a second, if we are so smart, why are we so stupid?!…) We are currently developing smart AI, smart machines, smart contact lenses, smart clothes, smart organs, smart appliances, smart software, smart computers, smart mouse, smart paint, smart weapons, smart exercise machines and even smart underwear. Eventually everything will be smart. Thus we may indeed end up having smart dust in a universe that “wakes up” as a smart, giant Computronium… The only thing that worries me a bit is what happens with our human, oh so human species in the age of smart? What happens to us when my toothbrush gets smarter than the whole [...]

We have already looked at some smart clothes and smart exercise machines that are currently being developed. Yet, so far we haven’t mentioned anything about smart underwear. The following video from Reuters News shows off the latest prototypes of smart underwear currently in development for the US military. The pair of high-tech undies is intended to measure all your vital signs, detect any potential injury, transmit the information wirelessly and even direct the release of drugs. Needless to say, the potential application for such smart underwear goes well beyond the military and can be successfully applied in variety of cases such as people suffering from different diseases such as diabetes, the elderly or some sports enthusiasts. The only question is: What’s next?… Smart toilet paper? Related articles by Zemanta Smart Clothes (singularityblog.singularitysymposium.com)

On the heels of the Smart Exercise Machines video here is another one on smart clothes: Imagine a dress that charges your iPod, changes color on a whim and will someday even monitor your vital signs. Researchers developing “smart cotton” say their nano-particle fabric will do all that and more. Smart Contact Lenses and Artificial Retinas

by Socrates

In the last few years Genetics, Robotics and Nanotechnologies have all become Information Technologies and are often quoted as singularity precursors. Vernor Vinge’s sci fi novel Rainbows End, set in what he calls “a slow take-off” pre-singularity period, describes wearable computers and smart contact lens technology for augmented reality. But is this science fiction? Is it so hard to imagine smart contact lenses or a robotic eye prosthesis with enhanced vision capabilities that are widely available at low prices? As attested by Reuters, the technology for those is already underway and may indeed be widely available around the 2020′s as predicted by Vernor Vinge… Are we all going to be cyborgs soon?
