Juan Enriquez is a bestselling author, TED All-Star with 9 TED Talks, and countless TEDx talks. Juan is an angel investor and Managing Director of Excel Venture Management. He has sailed around the world on an expedition that increased the number of known genes a hundredfold and was part of the peace commission that negotiated the cease-fire with the Zapatistas in Mexico. Most recently, Enriquez is the author of Right/Wrong: How Technology Transforms Our Ethics.

During this 90 min interview with Juan Enriquez, we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: why he is a very curious and optimistic Cromagnon; his work as a venture capitalist at Excel Venture Management; the difference between the price and the cost of health and education; the story of how science, technology, ethics, and angel investment came into his life; his work with Ed Boyden; Catholic ethics and certainty in what’s right and wrong; the importance of humility and forgiveness; why those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities; intelligent design, homo evolutis, and transhumanism; his latest book Right/Wrong; veganism, techno-solutionism and personal development; the Abrahamic religions and adaptation; AI and the technological singularity.

My favorite quote that I will take away from this interview with Juan Enriquez is:

Just do it and enjoy the ride!

Deus Ex’ Stunning Trailer for Human Revolution

September 18, 2010 by Socrates

Last Friday I posted a 2009 TED presentation by Juan Enriquez called Homo Evolutis is the Ultimate Reboot.

The videos below are 2 trailers for the new Deus Ex: Human Revolution video game.

While none of the clips was a part of Juan’s presentation I thought that they could have been a stunning visual representation of at least one scenario of what The Ultimate Reboot may turn out to look like.

You may say that this is nothing more but a fictitious trailer for a violent sci fi video game but, more-or-less, this is what others have said about their contemporary science fiction (such as Jules Verne). In time, what was crazy science fiction once has often become reality later.

So, what do you think?

What are the odds of those clips becoming reality?

Will technology replace biology?

Juan Enriquez at TED: Homo Evolutis is the Ultimate Reboot

July 26, 2010 by Socrates

This is an 18 minute mind-boggling, dead serious yet absolutely hilarious video of the presentation that Juan Enriquez did at TED in 2009.

Juan talks about what he calls Homo Evolutis: “hominids that take direct and deliberate control of over the evolution of their species… and others.”

Furthermore, Enriquez argues that the arrival of Homo Evolutis is the result of 3 on-going convergent trends that will likely bring about the ultimate reboot in the history of the universe. Those trends are:

1. the ability to engineer cells

2. the ability to engineer tissues

3. the ability to engineer robots

Juan Enriquez’ bio profile at TED:

” A broad thinker who studies the intersection of science, business and society, Juan Enriquez has a talent for bridging disciplines to build a coherent look ahead. Enriquez was the founding director of the Harvard Business School Life Sciences Project, and has published widely on topics from the technical (global nucleotide data flow) to the sociological (gene research and national competitiveness), and was a member of Celera Genomics founder Craig Venter‘s marine-based team to collect genetic data from the world’s oceans.

Formerly CEO of Mexico City’s Urban Development Corporation and chief of staff for Mexico’s secretary of state, Enriquez played a role in reforming Mexico’s domestic policy and helped negotiate a cease-fire with Zapatista rebels. He is a Managing Director at Excel Medical Ventures, a life sciences venture capital firm, and the chair and CEO of Biotechonomy, a research and investment firm helping to fund new genomics firms. The Untied States of America: Polarization, Fracturing, and Our Future, his latest book, looks at the forces threatening America’s future as a unified country.”

So, what do you think: Will Homo Sapiens be replaced by Homo Evolutis?

Will technology replace biology?

Ethos: “Technology is the How, not the Why or What. So you can have the best possible How but if you mess up your Why or What you will do more damage than good. That is why technology is not enough.” Nikola Danaylov
