Singularity Weblog Affiliate and Compensation Disclosure

This page exists for two reasons. The first is the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR Part 255 (“Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”), which requires anyone who reviews, recommends, or endorses products online to disclose any compensation or material connection they have with the maker of those products. Even though Singularity Weblog is based in Ontario, we follow the FTC standard because most of our readers live in the United States, and because it is, frankly, the right thing to do everywhere.

The second reason is simpler. Trust is the currency of independent media. We would rather over-disclose than leave you guessing.

So here is the full picture, in plain language.

How Singularity Weblog stays alive

Singularity Weblog is independent. It is not owned by a media conglomerate, a venture fund, or a foundation. It is supported by a mix of:

  • The Singularity.FM podcast and its archive
  • The newsletter at singularityweblog.com
  • Patreon supporters at patreon.com/singularityfm
  • Speaking engagements
  • Books and writing by Nikola Danaylov
  • A small number of affiliate relationships, listed below

If you have ever wondered how a long-running independent show keeps going, the honest answer is: a lot of work, and a lot of people quietly chipping in.

Affiliate relationships

Some of the links on this Site are affiliate links. If you click through and buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only join affiliate programs for tools, books, and services we actually use ourselves or genuinely recommend.

Our current affiliate relationships:

  • Amazon Associates. If you buy a book or other product through an Amazon link on the Site, we earn a small percentage of the sale.
  • QuixoticMedia (quixoticmedia.org). Singularity Weblog’s design and development partner. Where you see references or links to QuixoticMedia on the Site, an established working relationship exists.

If we add or remove affiliate relationships, we will update this page.

Sponsored content, gifts, and review copies

From time to time we receive review copies of books, advance access to products or services, conference passes, or other materials at no cost so we can review or discuss them. When that happens:

  • We will say so in the relevant article, episode, or post
  • The fact that something was provided for free does not change our review
  • A negative review of a free product is just as possible as a positive one

We do not do paid placement, paid endorsements disguised as editorial content, or pay-to-play interviews where a guest pays to appear on the show. Our editorial calendar is ours.

If a sponsorship arrangement does exist for a specific piece of content (for example, a sponsored episode of the podcast), it will be clearly labelled at the top of that episode and in the show notes.

Earnings, results, and forward-looking statements

The Site discusses futurism, technology, business, science, and human potential. Some of that involves forecasts, projections, opinions, and hopes about how the future might unfold.

None of it is a promise. Specifically:

  • Anything on the Site that describes how a tool, technique, idea, book, course, or service might benefit you is an opinion, not a guarantee.
  • Your results will depend on your own effort, skill, context, resources, and circumstances. They will not match anyone else’s.
  • We do not guarantee that any product, service, or idea discussed on the Site will earn you money, save you money, improve your business, lengthen your life, or extend your mind. Any of those outcomes are possible. None are promised.
  • Forward-looking language, words such as “anticipate,” “estimate,” “expect,” “project,” “intend,” “plan,” “believe,” and similar terms, expresses our view of how things might go, not how they will go.

If you want to verify any specific factual claim made on the Site, write to us through the contact form. We can usually point you to a source.

Editorial integrity

Compensation, affiliate or otherwise, does not buy editorial favour. The reviews, opinions, recommendations, and interview questions on the Site are the genuine views of Nikola Danaylov and the Singularity Weblog team. Where we have a financial connection to something we discuss, we say so on the relevant page and again in this disclosure.

If you ever feel a piece of content on the Site is inconsistent with this commitment, write to us. We take that feedback seriously.
