Charlie Rose

Carl Sagan on Charlie Rose: A Pale Blue Dot Capable of Greatness

January 20, 2012 by Socrates

I have previously posted a version of Carl Sagan‘s Pale Blue Dot.

However, since it is one of my all time favorites, I cannot help it but re-post another high definition version with the same sound but different video. I find it provides a uniquely cosmic perspective that we can often benefit from in our daily lives.

I recommend watching the first 2 videos at maximum quality and full screen.

We Humans Are Capable Of Greatness

Even though we are all infinitely small specs on an infinitely small spec in an endless universe, we humans are indeed capable of greatness. Check out Carl Sagan’s vision of the human future in space.

If, like me, you find yourself both moved and inspired by Carl Sagan’s voice, then you may want to watch the last video below too. It is the full recording of Carl Sagan’s original Charlie Rose Interview in which he discusses his titular book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.

Carl Sagan’s Last Interview: Science as a Candle in the Dark

December 17, 2011 by Socrates

Carl Sagan gave his last interview with Charlie Rose on May 27th 1996.

During his 20 minute interview, Sagan discussed pseudo-science and religion, technology and exponential growth, politics and education, his personal love affair with science and his struggle with myelodysplasia, as well as other elements of his last book: The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark.

The video also contains my all-time favorite quote from Carl Sagan:

“Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking; a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility.

If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then, we are up for grabs for the next charlatan (political or religious) who comes rambling along.”

Ethos: “Technology is the How, not the Why or What. So you can have the best possible How but if you mess up your Why or What you will do more damage than good. That is why technology is not enough.” Nikola Danaylov
