Singularity 1on1 Launches Crowd-Funding Campaign

September 24, 2012 by Socrates

Last week I launched the first ever Singularity 1 on 1 Crowd-Funding campaign. So, if you have ever felt like supporting this blog and its feature 1 on 1 interviews – now is the time.

[countdown-fx settings=”settings2.xml”][/countdown-fx]

As you can see above time is running out. Waiting for the singularity might be too late. So show your support now: http://www.indiegogo.com/singularity1on1

Singularity 1 on 1 IndieGoGo Crowd Funding Campaign

Singularity 1 on 1 is a series of podcast interviews with the best scientists, writers, entrepreneurs, film-makers, journalists, philosophers and artists, debating the impact of technology, exponential growth, genetics, robotics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and the technological singularity.

Current highlights:

  • 2 1/2 years of existence, over 90 episodes and 70 interviews
  • 100,000+ views on YouTube
  • 260,000+ audio downloads on iTunes, Zune, Blackberry Podcast..
  • 2,000+ email and RSS subscribers

Reaching the above stats has not been easy. It has been accomplished through 3 years of persistent dedication, selfless hard work and happy audience word-of-mouth, without any production budget or marketing money.

Singularity 1 on 1 has established itself not only as the first podcast of its kind but also as the most prominent one. The show has been consistent in delivering unique content via direct one-on-one interviews with high-profilers in an environment of unmatched authenticity, easy and open public access and total transparency.

The Best Is Still Ahead

I truly believe that the best is still ahead of us all. This is true for me personally but it is also true forSingularity 1 on 1, for you and for humanity in general. That is why Singularity Weblog‘s tag line is “a better future, better you.”

However, in order to create the future that we want, we must first be inspired to do so. Inspiration is the first and therefore most crucial step on any journey. The perspiration comes later. And, if we give ourselves a sufficiently strong “WHY” we can endure any “HOW”.

It’s been said that “When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” I have spent the last 3 years of my life living my message – that we can all get inspired, inspire and make the future happen rather than observe passively and let it happen to us.

Join me!

Support Singularity 1 on 1, donate and spread the word!

The Money

With the rising public profile of the show I have had to face an exponential increase in costs too. I have been invited to attend events and do in-person interviews across the globe but due to lack of financial resources have had to decline most of them.

I need to pay for better audio and video equipment, editing software and training, computers, blog hosting, design and server maintenance. Most importantly, I need to attend all relevant public conferences (nothing beats personal contact when it comes to soliciting for interviews) and travel for several pre-booked very high-profile in-person interviews that you will love. (Yes, you’ve got it, that interview is coming in a couple of weeks too 😉

In short, to get to the next level, I need to go pro and make the show financially self-sustainable.

The first step on that path is raising $30,000 to produce the next 30 episodes.

This is a modest goal, given the impact this show has already had and the thousands of people who have seen it and sent me messages of support. In fact, I am hoping that we will greatly surpass the above minimum target of $30,000 so that I can give you as many new episodes as I possibly can.

If you are as excited as I am to see many new guests of the highest profile that I have already lined up for Singularity 1 on 1, then do not delay or hesitate but show your support today!

Perks and Bonuses

Beyond enjoying the Singularity 1 on 1 podcast in its own right, I am offering 12 different levels of perks and bonuses, pretty much all of which have never been offered before. These are strictly limited to the duration of this campain and may never be offered again. So read them all carefully and pick the best option for you – this is the first and possibly only chance to do so.

The Man Behind The Show

Nikola DanaylovNikola Danaylov (aka Socrates) is a philosopher, singularitarian, and infopreneur. Born in Bulgaria, he moved in 1998 to Canada where he completed an HBA in Political Science, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Toronto plus an MA in Political Science at York University.

It was at York University that Nikola got deeply interested in the Technological Singularity and wrote a research paper titled “Hacking Destiny: Critical Security at the Intersection of Human and Machine Intelligence.”

After graduation Danaylov started SingularityWeblog.com and the popular Singularity 1on1 podcast.

During the summer of 2011 Nikola completed the Graduate Studies Program at Singularity University and returned home to Toronto, Canada where he lives with his beloved wife Julie.

The future belongs to those who care

Thank you for making it happen! And for spreading the word!

To Have Ads or Not To Have Ads

March 30, 2012 by Socrates

I hate ads.

Chances are you hate them too.

So why do I keep showing ads on SingularityWeblog.com?!

Well, it is because I don’t want to lose the meagerly $100 per month that I make from Google AdSense.

In fact, I’ve been frantically searching for ways to improve my revenue and make this blog financially viable. If I fail to accomplish that, then, I will eventually be forced to move on and find an alternative vocation – one that not only makes me happy as this one, but can also put some food on the table.

It is for this reason that I took Daniel Scocco‘s course on improving AdSense revenue. Taking the course, however, got me thinking about the exact opposite alternative as a potential solution:

What if I remove all the ads?

Ads or No Ads?

Surely, the value of the annoyance to my readers from the adds must be far greater than the revenue that those create for me. So by removing them I ought to be creating overall more net value than I’m losing. Furthermore, in theory, this should make people less distracted when visiting Singualrity Weblog and therefore incentivize them to spend more time here. In addition, even if I keep the ads and improve their revenue by a factor of 5 or 10 it still will not be sufficient to make the blog viable. Clearly, if Singularity Weblog is to survive and prosper, I must go beyond the ad revenue model.

But where will that money come from?!

Donations (as well as grants) seem like one of the potential sources of income. After all, many radio and TV programs are almost entirely funded by money raised through that model. However, with one very notable exception where a generous anonymous reader donated $2,500 for video, photo and audio equipment, I have been making about $50 per month from donations. Clearly, I need to improve my fund-raising skills and send out a more compelling message. Still, I suspect that, while donations will remain to be an integral part of SingularityWeblog’s revenue stream, they will continue to be fluctuating and therefore less reliable source of income.

So, donations can help to survive but it will take more to prosper:

It will take a solid business model that works.

Then, it dawned on me: I’ve got amazing readers who like the blog and thus have a stake in its success or failure. I believe that people such as yourself will probably enjoy it if Singularity Weblog got bigger and better. If that is true, then, why don’t I ask you to help me figure this out?!

Let’s start with something simple: Should I have ads or should I remove them all?

Once we figure this out, then, we can move on to bigger issues such as: “How do we make SingularityWeblog.com grow and prosper? What are the best business models, alternative sources of income or other ways to turn it into a financially viable entity which can stand on its own?”

Paul Baraka’s Original Video and Music Intro to Singularity Weblog

January 30, 2012 by Socrates

I was quite happy when a fan got in touch with me volunteering to produce an entirely original video and music intro for Singularity Weblog and Singularity 1 on 1. Little did I know that a couple of weeks later my happiness would turn into sheer ecstasy.

Paul Baraka of Vision Mantra made an incredibly dynamic, totally original, very creative and captivating video and music intro while accurately capturing the best of what this blog is and aspires to be.

I simply cannot stop watching the attached 22 second clip. For me, it works not only visually but also musically. Even if I close my eyes I still feel profoundly moved by the power of the soundtrack. How can you put so much energy and emotion in mere 22 seconds!?

When I gave Paul keywords such as: singularity, artificial intelligence, exhilaration, excitement, acceleration, optimism and cutting edge technology, I never actually thought that he would manage to successfully capture all of those terms and communicate them emotionally via video and audio. Yet, this is precicely what he did.

Call me partial, as I clearly am. But this hits me at such a deep emotional level that it cannot be mere attachment to my blog. It stirs my passion to continue and inspires me to do more and better work. It is uplifting, exciting and optimistic. It is all I wanted from a video and music intro and more.

Check it out and tell me: Don’t you just feel the same way?

Who is Paul Baraka?

Paul Baraka – Master of Epic Music, Sound Creator.

Paul Baraka is an enigmatic figure in the world of contemporary music. Many consider him to be a genius. Over several years, he has explored music in all of its forms, seeking to renew it, to reinvent it and to free its expression from traditional constraints. In Paul’s world, music is crafted to awaken the soul, to challenge the spirit and to foster introspection.

A genius by design, or by happenstance? To understand Paul’s passion, one must understand the energy that drives him and the prophetic vision that motivates him. A lengthy childhood illness left him in a semi-comatose state. He awoke haunted by a powerful and obsessing music and he made it his life’s work to express it. This was to be no ordinary music. It was to be a unique expression borne of a quest for an epic transcendence.

The story of the journey is worthy of being told. At the age of eighteen, Paul took up the piano and mastered it within two years, thanks to the support and encouragement of Jean-Marc Crête, then director of Montreal’s Collège Sainte-Croix. Paul, who had no musical training of any kind, arrived at Mr. Crête’s office one day and announced that he would not leave the premises until he was admitted to the college’s music program. This was true to form for Paul and the results were worth the gamble. Two years later, he won first prize in a national recital competition held at the college. Thereafter, he was admitted to the music program at Université de Montréal.

Paul Baraka is dyslexic. He can neither write nor read with normal proficiency, although he pores through scientific and historical texts that cater to his passions. Paul cannot write nor read music. He hears and he “understands” the sounds. Experts are confounded by his skills and the “genius” label has been attached to what they are at a loss to explain. Sorbonne musicologist Louis Hage, whom at one time was a mentor of Paul’s, encouraged his protégé to defy convention rather than to give in to conformist ways that would surely depreciate his talents. Paul was destined for better things.

Paul Baraka has composed music for television, documentaries, commercials, albums, live shows and more. In Canada, he has been nominated for a Gemini award and a Prix Gémeaux. Paul is a proud techno geek who appreciates and applies the synergies that make music and technology greater than than the sum of their parts. This has opened new vistas for leading-edge musical creation.

Paul is at work on several long form projects and he continues to relish the challenges and possibilities that each day brings. He embraces the role of the curious savant who feels and dwells in his art unlike a traditional composer does. Not surprisingly, chaos theory is where he finds a higher order that reveals invisible but profound harmonies.

Paul Baraka dreams of music as an art that blends human creativity with the momentum and wonder of science and technology. This combination of contrasting elements represents the key to an alternative of what has become wayward and worn. A musical form that is and has always been humankind’s only tool to name and to touch that which is divine.

Singularity Weblog Logo Contest

July 12, 2010 by Socrates

I am running a contest for a new Singularity Weblog logo.

Please help me pick the winner.

It is easy — just look at the proposed designs by clicking here.

Then come and post a comment after the post or email me your favorite design number and why in your opinion it deserves to win.

Thank you for your help.

Let us make Singularity Weblog better.

Logo Design Contest Update: We’ve got a winner!!!

Thank you all for your help and your input in choosing a new logo for Singularity Weblog.

There were at least 5 different design concepts that each could have won.

I had a few comments and even more emails about what your favorite design is. In the end it was a very tight race between two designs and, even though my own personal favorite design lost, I have no regrets because in all fairness I had to admit that the winner was the only one able to fulfill all the following requirements:

Simple.

Unique.

Easy to remember.

Easy to scale down to favicon and up to poster size.

Prints well in all colors.

Easy to mold and recreate in 3D physical shape.

Consistent with the Singularity Symposium branding.

I hope you like it!…
